Rodney electorate disappears

The Representation Commission – responsible for reviewing New Zealand’s electoral boundaries – is proposing sweeping changes to the Rodney electorate.

The proposed changes, released this week, would see Mahurangi move into a rearranged Helensville electorate. Wellsford, Te Hana and Pakiri, which are currently in Northland, would also move to Helensville.

The Helensville electorate will also include parts of what is now in the Upper Harbour electorate.

The balance of the Rodney electorate will form part of a new electorate called Whangaparaoa, and will include Dairy Flat and Coatesville.

Meanwhile, Helensville loses the Waitakere Ranges to New Lynn.

The commission says the adjustments are based on population growth. Without the changes, the growing Rodney electorate would be 14 per cent over its population quota.

The commission’s proposal will move 20,100 people, currently living in the Rodney electorate, to the Helensville electorate.

Helensville also gains 5000 from Northland and 4100 from Upper Harbour. At the same time is loses 11,700 to Whangaparāoa and 17,800 to New Lynn.

The boundary changes are due to be finalised by next April.
