Age Concern works in new ways

Although the Age Concern Rodney office in Orewa is closed for the lockdown, the support services it offers the elderly are still available.

Age Concern NZ chief executive Stephanie Clare says some of its services are being adapted from face to face to other forms of connection so that no one feels alone during this time.

“We want to make sure all older people are supported through the Covid-19 pandemic. This is not a time to sit in silence,” she says.

“We are following the Ministry of Health guidelines for all our services and using the most current advice in these rapidly changing times,” she says. “We also encourage friends, family and communities to find new ways to keep connected, including Skype calls, delivering a meal and phoning each other,” she says. “We all have the power to connect in a safe way and help each other.”

The local Age Concern can be contacted on its normal phone and email lines – phone 09 426 0916, email info@ageconcernrodney.org.nz.

This phone line is being redirected to staff who are working from home and able to assist.

“If you are worried about anything, from your medication and food supplies through to your mental wellbeing, you should call us,” Stephanie says. “Too often we hear of people not wanting to be a burden or make a fuss – please make a fuss! Staff and volunteers can help direct you to the support or information you need.”

The organisation is also pleased to see the government announce that superannuitants will get a cash bonus and a one-off doubling of the Winter Energy Payment this year.
