Local dairies in Whangaparaoa report they are busier than usual as people shop for essentials such as milk and bread, as well as chips and cigarettes.
Small dairies have a one-person in/one-person out rule to ensure a safe distance is maintained between customers. This has led to queues at some dairies, including Manly Pricecutter in Manly Village.
Seung Jin Ahn has owned Manly Park Dairy for more than 20 years. During the lockdown he is open, as usual, from 8am to 6pm.
“People need the same things, every day, that’s what we do,” he says.
He is running short of some stock, such as flour, but says people are understanding and his family is fine with him continuing to run the dairy as long as he keeps himself and customers safe.
In Manly Village, the milk delivery arrived as usual this morning at Manly Pricecutter while half a dozen customers queued outside.
Staff member Sandip Patel says bread, milk, drinks, cigarettes, some medicines, chips and items needed for baking are selling well.
Flour and hand sanitiser are hard to source and sell out quickly.
The store has its normal supply chains operating, but is currently purchasing most of the grocery items that it stocks from the supermarket.
He says customers are waiting politely and appreciate the service that the dairy provides.
