Rotarians deliver the goods

The three local Rotary clubs – Orewa, Whangaparaoa and the satellite club in Millwater – have combined forces to assist with grocery shopping during the lockdown for those who, for whatever reason, cannot get out themselves.

Rotarian Brian Mullan is coordinating their efforts.

He says a leaflet drop and posts on local Facebook pages let people know that the service was available and on March 27 the first request came through.

Since then, demand has continued to rise on the Hibiscus Coast, from Millwater to Gulf Harbour.

Brian says this is because there is such pressure on supermarkets’ online shopping service, and there are elderly people who do not use the internet.

Rotarians have also been able to form networks of volunteers who may not belong to the club, but are keen to help. Two Rotarians who live in Gulf Harbour have organised a team of 50 to shop for, and deliver groceries.

People supply their shopping list and make arrangements through neighbours, family members or friends to pay, generally by internet banking.

The groceries are left at the address with no personal contact taking place.

“I realise that most old folks have family or neighbours doing the shopping for them,” Brian says. “Rotary is just doing what we can for people who don’t have those connections.”

Age Concern Rodney may also put elderly people who need the service in touch with Rotary.
