Grocery volunteers re-group

Help is once again available to anyone unable to shop for themselves during Alert Level 3, with a number of groups and individuals offering assistance.

Mahurangi Caremongers is back in business, and while not running organised shopping days at Warkworth New World as it did during lockdown, has volunteers available to help people out on a one-to-one basis. Anyone in need of help should call main organiser Grant Henderson and he will put them in touch with a volunteer.

Age Concern visiting service coordinator and Rodney Neighbourhood Support volunteer, Sue Robertson, is also back on shopping duty for people who can’t get to the supermarket. She will take a list of up to 20 items, do the shopping and deliver it throughout the Warkworth, Snells Beach and Leigh areas, covering different areas each day.

In addition, the Student Volunteer Army has teamed up with New World to offer grocery deliveries across the country for anyone aged over 65, essential workers or for anyone who is vulnerable. The service is offered online or over the phone, with contactless delivery within 48 hours. There is a $6 delivery fee with this service.

Both Warkworth supermarkets have seen fewer queues and shortages since the move into Level 3 last week.

New World store manager Jeremy Ross said this was due to maintaining normal opening hours, from 7am to 9pm, and limiting the number of essential items people could buy.

“Last time, we opened from 9am to 7pm and lost four hours’ shopping time — that’s something we don’t want to move back to at all,” he said. “This time, we’ve noticed people are acting really well. It’s not quite so desperate in Level 3.”
