Sailor on track for Christmas reunion – just

Dmitry Pelevin is now just 500 Nautical Miles from being home with his son in Gulf Harbour for Christmas Day (HM December 2).

At the start of the year, Dmitry was in Russia when Covid-19 closed borders and cancelled flights, making it a challenge to return home to NZ.

He had promised his seven-year-old son Andrei that he would be there for Christmas, and so he bought an old yacht and began sailing. He hasn’t slept on shore for more than six months.

He is currently just passing the Kermadec Islands, on the final leg home but he is cutting it fine to get here for Christmas Day.

He is expected to arrive in Opua on December 22 for quarantine but has been told if he has a negative Covid test when he arrives on the quarantine dock, he will be able to head down to Gulf Harbour in time for Christmas.

Gulf Harbour Marina found him a berth, thanks to a special plea from Hibiscus Matter, so that he can stay near his son who lives with ex-wife Olga.
