Arkles cliff walkway closed

Cliffs around Arkles Bay continue to slip, slide and tumble down with the latest fall completely blocking the foot track which runs from the bottom of Arkles Drive to Whangaparaoa Road.

A rock the size of a concrete mixer and a large tree crashed down the cliff beside the path last month after heavy rain, making the track unsafe.

The path is used by Arkles Bay residents to walk to and from Whangaparaoa Road and is especially popular with Whangaparaoa Primary students as a route to and from school.

Auckland Council staff and an arboriculture expert have investigated and coned off the track. Council’s head of operational management and maintenance, Agnes McCormack, says it will be at least four weeks before the path and slip are cleared. “The council’s geotechnical engineer will need to assess the stability of the cliff beside the path,” she says. “The path may then have to be realigned.”
