Mens Shed members sought

As the Hibiscus Men’s Shed moves ahead with its plans to establish a shed in Silverdale, it is seeking members from the local community and will hold a public meeting this week to encourage that process to begin.

Recently the Hibiscus Men’s Shed Trust signed a lease with the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board for a site in Silverdale War Memorial Park and has Auckland Council’s approval to construct a building and sealed driveway with parking pad on the 900sqm site.

The next stage is to finalise the building design and obtain quotes from suppliers, followed by the massive job of raising sufficient funding to cover the cost of the build. The project is estimated to cost in the vicinity of $400,000–$500,000, which will be sourced by applying for grants from organisations such as Lotteries and the Lion Foundation.

There are 22 of Men’s Sheds in NZ, and some have more than 100 members.

They consist of not-for-profit community workshops where, for a small fee, members can drop in for a chat and to work on tasks. Resources are provided, including tools and equipment for woodwork, engineering, model making and electronics with space to expand to other interests as the need arises.

Chair Stuart Johnston says that a core group of less than half a dozen men have taken the project to this stage. He hopes that more local men will now get actively involved to help move it forward to completion.

The Trust is holding a meeting on August 23 in Orewa designed to inform people about what a Men’s Shed is, as well as answering any questions and signing up new members.

The meeting is at Orewa Community Centre, Orewa, from 11.30am–1pm. All are welcome. Info: contact Stuart Johnston on 027 492 3357 or 09 424 7854, or email hibiscsusshed@outlook.com.
