Plastic bags out

Both Countdown and New World supermarkets in Warkworth will eliminate the use of plastic shopping bags by the end of next year.

Countdown Warkworth store manager Clinton Wallace says the change is in response to a survey of customers, where 83 per cent of people supported a ban on the bags.

“The move is all about reducing damage to the environment and we can’t see any issues with the idea,” Clinton says.

In June, Countdown on Waiheke Island successfully trialled being plastic bag free.

Clinton says to encourage investment in reusable bags, the store will be selling them for a reduced price of $1 each.

“Last year we saw a 130 per cent increase in the purchase of re-usable bags, so people are definitely keen to use them.”
