Political rookies join experienced hands on Council

Mike Williamson and Vicki Watson

It’s more of the same for the Hibiscus Coast after both sitting councillors, John Watson and Wayne Walker, were re-elected to represent Albany Ward.

This will be a second term on Auckland Council for Watson, and the third for Walker. Both were previously on Rodney District Council and Watson also served a term on the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board.

Both are resident on the Hibiscus Coast.

Final results show Watson well ahead with 19210 votes, and Walker second with 17842.

Centre right Auckland Future candidates Lisa Whyte and Graham Lowe were in third and fourth places respectively with Whyte more than 2000 votes behind Walker.

The Hibiscus & Bays local board (Hibiscus subdivision) welcomes its youngest ever member, Caitlin Watson (18), as well as two other members new to politics, while Janet Fitzgerald, who, by contrast, has been in local body politics for around nine years, returns with the highest number of votes for the Hibiscus subdivision. She was the only one on this subdivision to stand for re-election.

Joining her to represent the Coast are three candidates who all stood on the People & Penlink First ticket – firefighter Mike Williamson, Vicki Watson, who has a background in finance and education and BA student Caitlin Watson. None have any previous political experience.

The inaugural meeting of the governing body is on November 1. The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board will be sworn in on November 2.
