Spirit fare kindly donated

For the fourth year running, Real Estate agent Karen Franklin is looking for a young person, age 15–19, who would like to go on a Spirit of NZ voyage but would normally be prevented from going because of the cost.

The voyages involve various challenges as well as helping to sail the ship and can be life changing, boosting the young person’s confidence and self-belief.

Karen will cover the whole fare for the voyage itself, valued at around $2000, for the winning applicant.

She has paid the fare for four people to go on a 10-day Spirit of NZ voyage since launching an annual competition in 2014. She started the competition after seeing the positive spin offs for her own son, Ben, who went on his first Spirit of NZ voyage at the age of 15.

Karen met up with last year’s winner, Cameron Trought, after his voyage and says he was a different person. “He had a new air of confidence about him – he was just beaming and said it had made a huge difference,” Karen says. “He had also met a heap of great people on the ship.”

Karen is asking anyone who knows of a young person who might benefit from this voyage (especially someone who would not otherwise get the opportunity) to ‘shoulder tap them’ to apply.

All the details are at www.karenfranklin.co.nz under the Spirit of NZ tab. The final entries are judged by the Spirit of New Zealand Trust and Karen.

Entries close on June 14. The winner will be published in Hibiscus Matters.
