Strong turnout for first Ōrewa run

The 15km and 10km run competitors get underway in Ōrewa.

Run Ōrewa, held on Sunday, January 16, was the first event that Running Events have been able to hold for nine months.

It is the latest addition to the company’s North Shore Run series and a fine day and around 1000 competitors keen to take part was a positive start for the organisers who were pleased that the Coast dodged any ill effects from Cyclone Cody.

There was a staggered start in Western Reserve, with the course utilising Te Ara Tahuna – the Ōrewa Estuary walk and cycleway.

Options included runs of 15km, 10km and 5km with a 2km kids’ dash as well as 10km and 5km competitive walks.

All competitors had to be double vaccinated.

The longest event, the 15km run, was won by Ben Parker in just under an hour – 00:58:34, with Philip McNamara and Craig Butland second and third respectively.

Not far behind was the first woman home, Dale Berrill, in fourth place. Her time was 01:02:31.

Race director Rob Docherty says it was a great return to Ōrewa after four years –Running Events were the organisers of the Ōrewa Half Marathon, which

was last held in 2018.

The other events in the North Shore Run series are Run the Point, Run Devonport and Run Albany.
