Warkworth dojo swipes plenty of silverware

A squad of karate students from Warkworth’s Red Scorpion Marshal Arts school travelled to the Shotokan Karate Tournament in Auckland on Saturday, September 21.

There were 300 competitors from all over New Zealand and visiting teams from Australia.

Despite tough competition, the students gained 14 placings between them.

Among them was Heath Rigby, who took first place in kata black belt boys, and Jessica O’Neill, who took first in kata black belt girls.

Red Scorpion instructor Andrew Goddard says the school only sent a small team, so to get 14 placings was an exceptional result.

“The team trained hard and deserve recognition,” he says.

The class trains at the Warkworth Showgrounds with an all ages class on Mondays and Thursdays from 6.30pm to 8.30pm

There is also a junior class for students aged 7 and below. This runs on a Monday from 3.30pm to 4.30pm under the guidance of Sempai Clara Pepito and Sempai Wendy Murphy.

“Martial Arts is one of the best fitness regimes, working both mind and body. It’s is an all-over workout, boosts confidence and mental awareness,” Andrew says.
