Winter sports’ woes continue

Hibiscus Coast Raiders were “hugely disappointed” to find, after returning to restricted training under Level 2.5 for a short time, that the rest of their season was cancelled. Auckland Rugby League announced on September 6 that a return to play was no longer possible for club grades due to the gathering limit of 10. No winners were declared for any grades.

HBC Netball in Manly has decided that the remaining games of the winter season cannot be played, with all winter competitions cancelled. The club will offer a summer league.

Meanwhile, rugby and football are in limbo, awaiting decisions from their governing bodies.

Hibiscus Coast AFC president Scott Beard said last week that the club’s season is still up in the air, with no clear indication until the Government makes its next Alert Level decision.

“I think the community aspect of Northern Region Football should be ended,” he says. “We have the fields until the end of September, so if we are allowed to resume 11-a-side games and community football ends, we will look to play in-house games across all grades, adhering to all Covid requirements.”

He says the only exception could be the men’s and women’s top teams, who are in contention for promotion (HM September 2). The club is hopeful that Northern Region Football can find a way to finish the round. The Men have three games to go, and the women have one.

“Moving forward we will start getting summer football organised,” Scott says.
