Arts – Suzanne Vega heads to Auckland

The iconic singer Suzanne Vega, whose songs Luka, Tom’s Diner, Marlene on the Wall and many more became worldwide favourites in the ’80s, is coming to Auckland Town Hall on September 10.

Vega emerged with her original neo-folk songs, performing with her acoustic guitar in Greenwich Village clubs, and has since become one of the foremost songwriters of her generation.

Her Auckland career-spanning show will also introduce songs from her latest album, Flying with Angels, released in 2025. She will be joined by her longtime guitarist Gerry Leonard, who has worked with David Bowie, and cellist Stephanie Winters.

Critics continue to praise Vega’s live performances, with Rolling Stone describing her work as “lucid reflections and crisp music to match”, and saying: “Her voice remains both knowing and observant.”

Vega is known for her distinctive emotional style and her ability to weave storytelling into contemporary folk songs about city life, ordinary people and real-world subjects. The Auckland concert will be her only Auckland  appearance.

A good excuse to visit Wellington is the return of the spectacular WOW – World of WearableArt – to TSB Arena with GLO!, a high-voltage, multi-sensory collision of art and performance.

The world-leading international wearable art competition runs from September 17 to October 4. This year’s show centres on six worlds, each exploring a different creative energy – from fire-forged metal and unreal nature to explosive movement and playful Kiwi nostalgia.
