Pursuit ends in arrest

A 24-year-old man is facing a number of serious charges after a high speed pursuit on Matakana Road this morning.

A Dodge ram pick-up was observed in Warkworth driving in a dangerous manner and was reported to Police who identified that the car was stolen from Kaukapakapa on Thursday night.

Police units briefly located the vehicle near Puhoi about 9am but lost sight of it. The vehicle was seen again around 9.30am in Woodcocks Road but the driver failed to stop.

Area Commander in Rodney, Inspector Mark Fergus, said that due to the dangerous manner in which the offender was driving, the Police withdrew out of sight and the movements of the car were tracked overhead by the Eagle helicopter.

Around 10 minutes later the offending driver crashed into a car near the intersection of Sharp and Matakana Roads, spun out of control and collided with a tree.

The driver attempted to reverse away but Police officers arrived, smashed the window and arrested the 24-year-old driver.

The offender sustained an arm injury. A member of the public sustained some bumps and bruises but was not admitted to hospital.

Police thanked the Warkworth community for their assistance with this incident
