St John service honoured

Snells Beach resident Joy Boniface, 84, says what keeps her going is thinking of other people.

She made the remark after receiving a certificate marking 42 years of service as a volunteer for St John Ambulance.

Joy also received a bar to her long service medal at the same ceremony.

The presentations were made by St John patron Richard Blundell at an award ceremony at St Marks Anglican Church in Remuera.

The service awards a long service medal after 12 years then a bar to each medal after five years.
Joy now has three silver and three gold bars.

Joy says notable events during her long service include receiving her first first-aid certificate in 1974, and in 1978 she established a cadet division in Howick.

For the last 20 years she has been organising St John coverage for events in the Mahurangi area, first as a superintendent and then as a divisional manager.

Her current duties involve promoting the St John Supporter Scheme whereby, for an annual subscription, participants receive free emergency ambulance transport to the nearest hospital.
