Residents at the Gulf Harbour/Army Bay end of Whangaparaoa Peninsula are keeping active and embracing a community spirit while in isolation.
Last weekend, the residents of two Gulf Harbour marina apartment blocks participated in a morning workout, from a distance.
Videos shared on the Gulf Harbour & Army Bay Facebook page show residents out on their balconies doing an exercise routine to music from speakers positioned at ground level. A total of 12 residents participated in the first workout, on April 5.
The organiser of the event says she had been exercising to Rod Stewart songs in her room when she thought, with the sunshine, it would be a good opportunity to get the neighbours to join in from their balconies.
Further sessions could also be held during lockdown.
Meanwhile, Gulf Harbour resident Sue Collett, who is the education manager of Fairy Godmothers Homebased Childcare, has been connecting with children online during the isolation period. With Easter coming up, this week’s online mat time session involved dressing up as the Easter bunny and a special guest – Bop Bop the rabbit.
Councillor John Watson and family recently started an ‘Isolation Olympics’ competition in their Army Bay household as a replacement for the 2020 Olympics that were postponed due to the global health pandemic.
The Watson family is encouraging locals to take part in their own games within their ‘bubble’ and get creative with modified sports that you can play in a confined living space.
“This may be a good way for families with young kids who are missing out on their sporting activities, to enjoy some creative family fun and friendly competition,” Cr Watson says.
