Usually we would enter a lion’s den with caution – but not this one.
The Lyons Den Barbershop, owned by Nico and Ruby Lyons, is designed to make people instantly feel welcome, relaxed and at home.
The retro-look barber’s chairs are super comfortable, while a stylish fit-out, including a custom-made ‘barn door’ and range of artworks depicting celebrities as Generals gives the place personality.
Barber Nico opened the The Lyons Den in Hillary Square, Ōrewa, last month. It is co-owned by his partner Ruby, who is also a hair stylist.
The 27-year-old honed his skills as a barber at a young age – he was in demand to cut his friends’ hair when he was just 15.
He has been a professional barber for almost a decade, most recently working in Epsom – but it’s the first time he’s had his own salon.
The X factor for any barber is the ability to make people of all ages and walks of life feel at ease and Nico has this in spades.
Most of all, he loves using his skills to give clients a fresh look. As well as cutting their hair, he has Nishman hair and beard styling products and a small range of Offside tshirts, shorts, hats and masks, so everyone leaves the barbershop feeling and looking good.
His clients, who are 99 percent men, range in age from children to 99-years.
After lockdown, longer styles are popular, he says, even for older clients.
“People come to me because they like what I do, and I am always upskilling and keeping up with trends,” he says.
