Dynamic lane pedestrian crossing delayed

Auckland Transport (AT) is delaying its plan to put a raised pedestrian crossing across the dynamic lane on Whangaparāoa Road, following public consultation.

The $1.2m crossing was described by Albany Ward councillors earlier this year as “a de facto judder bar on the busiest arterial road on the Coast”.

It was to go outside 139 Whangaparāoa Road and have pedestrian activated lights and a wide, flat speed bump.

It was designed to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists and slow down drivers. It resulted from public concerns about safely crossing Whangaparāoa Road, which were raised when the dynamic lanes were being installed.

Along with the new crossing, the footpath on the southern side was to be widened between Red Beach Road intersection and 136 Whangaparāoa Road. A new bus stop was also to go outside 135 Whangaparāoa Road.

An AT spokesperson told Hibiscus Matters last week that feedback, pedestrian safety and timeframes were carefully considered.

“After taking all factors into account, we decided to delay progressing this project until funding can be secured to undertake it in conjunction with broader pedestrian improvements to Whangaparāoa Road,” the spokesperson says.
