Snells Beach cat owners are being asked to keep an eye on their pets, after dotterels were attacked early last Wednesday morning, October 19, forcing two birds off their nest and scattering their three eggs.
Snells Shoreline Conservation Community member Becky Swan said pawprints could be seen in the wet sand leading to and from the nest, and it was too soon to tell whether the birds had been injured, or if the eggs would go on to hatch.
She said she understood that people loved their cats, but if felines could be contained, or even wear a brightly coloured or LED-light collars, it would improve the survival chances of the handful of resident dotterels and their nests.
