Members of one of the most long-standing, recognisable and respected running clubs on the Coast, the Night Ninjas, recently achieved top placings at the Gold Coast Marathon. Eight runners represented the club at the event, held on July 6 and 7. Gene Rand placed first in the 50-54 age category, in a time of 2:39:22 and Troy Harold was third in the same category in 2:40:01. Local physiotherapist and Ninja social member Karen Donaldson-Barron came in second in the 40-44 age group with a time of 2:50:25.
All three are huge advocates for running, encouraging even the slowest of runners to come on local training runs,
Members in their bright orange vests can be seen at Millwater parkruns, trail and ultramarathon events, cross country and distance runs.
The club started in 2016 with a couple of dads running in the evenings once the kids were in bed. It is now an affiliated national athletics club with more than 130 members of all ages.
Group training runs are held throughout the week to cater to all runners and new members are welcome.
“It’s a supportive, inclusive club for anyone who wants to move forward in their running,” Gene says.
