Outdoor fires no longer need a permit, following Fire & Emergency NZ’s announcement last week that the region has returned to an open fire season.
The exception is on populated Hauraki Gulf islands, such as Kawau, which have moved to a restricted fire season, and conservation islands where open air fires are still prohibited.
FENZ says people should still make sure conditions are suitable before starting any outdoor fires and be ready to respond to changing conditions.
“Do not light fires bigger than you can manage or extinguish. If you’re planning to light a sizeable fire, please also let us know.”
