Rodney Cricket Association (RCA) and Hibiscus Coast Under 15 cricketer Nikhil McClintock is used to smashing sixes – now he’s just hit it out of the park at the Hibiscus Coast Cricket Club (HCCC) junior prizegiving.

At the ceremony in Silverdale on April 6, the Year 9 Mahurangi College student collected an impressive raft of batting and bowling awards, as well as special awards.

Rodney junior coordinator Christine Sheehy says it was an outstanding performance from McClintock.
“He’s a very talented, and very humble young man,” she says.

“The summer series Nikhil played in (for Hibiscus Coast Under 15) is an Auckland-wide development pathway competition for keen players who want to build their skills and play more cricket.

“They play longer format 40-over matches, as well as a T20 series over the summer holidays. It’s a way for youth players to maintain their connection to club cricket once they are at college. Once the kids go on to college, they usually play for their school team.”

At the prizegiving there were batting, bowling and Spirit of Cricket awards handed out to players from each Hibiscus Coast junior cricket team, including Rodney.

Rodney Cricket is part of Northern Districts, but junior teams play under Hibiscus Coast Cricket Club.

“This allows the kids to play Saturday games on the North Shore, rather than playing in the Northland competition which would be logistically challenging for many families,” Sheehy says.

Three Rodney Rockets Under 11 players, Andre Came, Logan Clayton and Fergus Hawken, shared their team’s bowling award with 13 wickets each, which Sheehy says is “pretty unusual”.

Also notable was Rodney Redbacks Under 12 batsman Jackson Tua, winning his team’s batting award after scoring 144 runs in just his first full season of cricket.

Sheehy says that was a good start to Jackson’s career and pretty neat.

The U11, U12 and U13 Rodney sides all play in the Auckland cricket T20 series, which is the core cricket competition for junior players with games every Saturday over summer.

“We had a great season with lots of parents getting behind the kids, and lots of good spirit. It is great to see the Rodney kids enjoying the game, developing skills year on year, and holding their own against the Auckland teams.”

Sheehy says Rodney is a growing club and always keen for new players, so if anyone would like to be on the mailing list for next season they can visit the Rodney Cricket Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/RodneyCric or email rodneycric@gmail.com
