Social advocate organisation Te Whai Community Trust has launched Manaaki Transport, a free and reliable community transport service to support Mangawhai’s older residents who live in rural areas.

A community-led initiative, Manaaki Transport offers seniors travel to and from community and social events, as well as medical appointments and essential services within a designated Mangawhai area.

Manaaki Transport coordinator Roanna Pine says the service will help strengthen independence, social connection and participation in community life.

“Mangawhai’s rural nature and absence of public transport can create a real barrier for older people to stay connected to their community and maintain independence,” she says. “This service is designed to make it easier for older residents to attend events and access support – all without the added cost of travel. We’re excited to offer a reliable and people-focused service.”

Te Whai Community Trust gratefully acknowledges Te Tari Kaumātua – Office for Seniors for their support in delivering the service.

Manaaki Transport operates every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am to midday (excluding public holidays). To register and for more details, including a service area map, visit www.bit.ly/ManaakiTransport2025
