More than 200 people visited a two-day community photo exhibition in Puhoi last month, organised by Puhoi Vision & Action.
As well as viewing more than 300 images of local people, places and events, visitors were able to contribute thoughts and ideas for the community’s future and what was important to them about Puhoi.
One of the organisers, Sarah Churchouse, said many people found the display quite stirring, especially photos of the 2023 floods.

“Many described the experience as moving and meaningful, with several saying they left feeling more bonded and connected to both the people and the place they call home,” she said.
One visitor commented that seeing the photos was an emotional experience .
“They reminded me of the heartbreak of the floods, but also the strength of our community and how we pulled together through it all.”
One of the highlights was the announcement of the People’s Choice award, which went to Laura Remacha for her image featuring Puhoi Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Russell Green up to his waist in floodwaters in the main street in 2023.
Churchouse said the event exceeded expectations in attendance and impact.
“We wanted to create something that celebrated Puhoi’s essence and what came through so clearly was how much love there is here – the gratitude from the community was overwhelming,” she said.
Public events and activities are continuing to gauge how Puhoi residents, businesses and organisations want to see the community develop and move forward. Ideas and information gathered will then be analysed by Auckland Council-funded facilitator Denise Bijoux, followed by a public presentation in July.
