Owners of more than two dogs in a residential area will face a hefty increase in dog fees under a number of increases proposed by Kaipara District Council.
In its annual review of fees and charges, council is proposing to increase the one-off permit fee for two dogs from $84 to $180.
The non-working dogs annual registration fee is proposed to increase from $76 to $78, and working dogs annual registration fee from $50 to $51, an increase of 2.2 per cent.
A council spokesperson says fees and charges are set on a user-pays basis so that the costs passed onto ratepayers are kept to a minimum.
Most fees not set by statute are proposed to increase by 2.2 per cent, in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
However, a substantial increase has been proposed for temporary road closure fees for events from $621 to $1994; bond from $6029 to $6000 to $10,000 and an introduction of a fee for temporary road closure inspections of $897. These fees may be reduced for charitable events.
Council is accepting feedback on the proposed fees and charges for a month from April 7.
Some fees and charges are set by statute such as the new Ministry of Primary Industries Domestic Food Business Levy, and do not go through consultation. The $57.50 levy starts on July 1 and will increase to $115 by July 2027. Most domestic food businesses will be charged the levy that council will collect on the behalf of MPI.
