Youth theatre marks 15 years

Centrestage Youth Theatre is celebrating 15 years of nurturing young performers the best way it knows how, by putting on a show.

The performance, 15: Past, Present and Future, will feature a talented cast of 12 to 21-year-olds, showcasing songs from a wide range of musicals, including Book of Mormon, Guys & Dolls, Bugsy Malone, Singin’ in the Rain, The Greatest Showman, Frozen and more.

Centrestage Youth Theatre was formed in 2010 to give young people performance opportunities in the region’s only purpose-built theatre between Whangārei and Takapuna.

Centrestage president Michael Sanders encourages everyone to come along to see “the stars of the future” onstage, as there will be something for everyone in the performance lineup.

The show was built around a simple idea; Michael asked the cast what shows they wanted to sing from, and the programme grew from there.

However, this performance is built from more than just rehearsals and hard work –  it’s a culmination of 15 years of successful youth performances.

Michael says his favourite part of volunteering his time to the theatre is seeing how theatre is able to give a voice to kids of all levels of confidence.

“The best part is seeing young people grow and progress, realising their passion along the way. You can be someone else for a few hours.”

Evening performances take place at 7.30pm, Wednesday, July 2, and Saturday, July 5, with a matinee at 2pm on Saturday, July 5.
