If you’re looking for a midwinter challenge with a feel-good twist, the Arkles Bay Midwinter Splash is heading your way. Now in its ninth year, the popular event returns to the beach at 10am on Sunday, August 3, and organiser Greg Holland is hoping for a strong community turnout.
“It’s the ninth year, and we are keen to keep building the momentum of the event and get as many people on the beach as possible,” Greg says.
The event has become a much-loved Coast tradition, combining fun, fundraising and a bracing dash into the cold waters of Arkles Bay. Participants dress in colourful costumes, some more practical than others, and dive into the sea to raise funds for Harbour Hospice. To date, more than $10,000 has been raised.
Last year saw record numbers, with around 130 people taking part and more than $3000 raised. Greg says it was especially encouraging to see so many people of all ages get involved.
There will be spot prizes for best dressed, hot drinks and ice cream, and possibly a surprise to help warm swimmers up afterwards.
Greg, who now swims in the sea three times a week through winter, says the event inspired him to become a year-round swimmer, and it’s been life-changing. He encourages first-timers to take up the challenge.
“My advice is to focus on how incredible you’ll feel afterwards.”
Everyone is welcome to join in or come along to cheer from the beach. Just don’t forget your towel.
