Infrastructure progress

It’s fair to say that people in our region are used to waiting patiently – but also, when necessary, speaking up firmly – for the things that matter most to our communities. That includes local infrastructure that supports growth, protects the environment and strengthens our economy.

On that note, I’m pleased to report that while progress on water infrastructure in our area has been slower than we’d all like, there is progress nonetheless.

In recent months there’s been some forward movement on a number of local water-related issues including stormwater resilience, drinking water supply, and wastewater treatment. Whether it’s the extension of existing networks or upgrades to future-proof our towns for population growth, these investments are essential and overdue. I’ll continue to advocate strongly in this space, particularly where central government agencies or legislation are involved – making sure that red tape doesn’t slow down shovel-ready projects.

Meanwhile, another key area of infrastructure that’s seen welcome recent developments is transport – specifically the next stage of the expressway north of Warkworth.

The Warkworth to Te Hana section of the four-lane motorway is an important piece of the puzzle in supporting both local connectivity and broader economic development across the region. This next stage of the expressway project will create many jobs for locals during construction and, in time, will support freight efficiency, safer travel and stronger links to Northland.

Of course, infrastructure investments like these are not just about concrete, pipes and roads. They’re about people – ensuring our communities can thrive in a growing region. Clean water and modern transport corridors might not be the most glamorous topics, but they’re absolutely fundamental to the quality of life we enjoy now and the opportunities we pass on to future generations.

I want to acknowledge the patience and persistence of our community leaders and residents who have pushed for these changes over many years. Your voices have made a difference – and they’ll continue to be important as we work together to get the basics right.

As your local MP, I’ll keep championing the needs of Kaipara ki Mahurangi – rural and urban alike – to ensure that our area receives the attention, funding and action that it deserves. We may be making slow progress, but at least we are moving in the right direction.
