Technology can baffle the best of us, which is why Stanmore Bay resident Tristan Lee-Johnson launched Tech2U, a service to help older Coasties who feel unsure about using phones, computers or other digital tools.
While his focus is on supporting the older generation, Tristan says he has noticed that the rapid pace of change means even younger people are beginning to fall behind.
“Technology has become incredibly complex and expensive, making it almost impossible for anyone to be an expert in every aspect of it,” he says.
He finds that people generally need help with internet connectivity, managing emails and staying in touch with family and friends online.
Trust and reassurance are central to his approach, he says. “I am fully insured and take every care to help my students feel at ease at all times. Trust is important to me.”
He brings 18 years of IT experience in the United Kingdom, working in a data centre for clients such as the National Health Service and Ministry of Defence. He later worked aboard a cruise ship catering for over-55s, where he lectured on IT and helped passengers connect with loved ones, send messages and solve everyday technology problems.
That experience, he says, taught him patience and how to teach in a stress-free way that empowers people to learn at their own pace.
After moving to the Coast for a relaxed beachside lifestyle, Tristan decided to share his expertise locally. His fully mobile service now covers Whangaparāoa, Silverdale and Ōrewa, offering friendly, one-on-one support in people’s homes.
