Rodney music enthusiasts, especially jazz lovers, are in for an unforgettable afternoon when The John Rae Trio takes the stage at the Warkworth Town Hall on Saturday, October 11 at 4pm.
Featuring three of New Zealand’s most celebrated jazz musicians – John Rae, Patrick Bleakley and Ben Wilcock – the ensemble will perform music from their acclaimed album Splendid Isolation alongside new works and selections from Rae’s extensive catalogue.
Presented by Warkworth Music, the concert promises to be a highlight of the local musical calendar, appealing to both seasoned jazz aficionados and newcomers.
Audiences can expect an evening rich in rhythm, creativity and world-class musicianship.
A renowned drummer and composer, the prodigious Rae recorded his first album at just 16 with saxophonist Tommy Smith.
Over his career, he has recorded more than 30 albums earning two BBC Jazz Album of the Year awards along the way.
Before moving to NZ, Rae was a leading figure in Britain’s jazz scene, known for projects that boldly blended jazz with traditional Scottish music and dance.
Here he continues to teach, lead workshops and compose for ensembles including the NZ Symphony Orchestra and the Royal New Zealand Airforce Concert Orchestra.
Joining him is double bassist Bleakley, who has been a stalwart of the Kiwi jazz circuit since he started out with the legendary group Blerta.
Known for his warm sound, groove and deep musicality, notably he has performed with the likes of Jonathan Crayford and Alda Rezende.
Rounding out the trio is pianist Wilcock.
While originally from Hamilton, Wilcock has been a prominent part of Wellington’s jazz community since 1999 and collaborated with soul stars Bella Kalolo, Aaradnha and Louis Baker, not to mention released an album called Sneaky Weasel with his own trio, The Jelly Rolls.
Wilcock also teaches at the NZ School of Music and has contributed to acclaimed stage productions including Indian Ink’s The Pickle King.
So don’t miss this rare chance to experience three of New Zealand’s top jazz talents live on stage.
