Hibiscus Coastguard volunteers recognised in 2025 awards

Finalists MIchael Kern and Fiona Rist.

Two Hibiscus Coastguard members have been named finalists in the Coastguard Volunteer Awards of Excellence, with two others also receiving nominations. The winners will be announced on Monday September 22.

Michael Kern is a finalist for Operational Crew Member of the Year. A crew member since 2018, Kern has mentored newer volunteers and is known for his skill at the helm. His finalist profile describes him as reliable and highly skilled, noting his “strong helmsmanship, including precise vessel handling, confident navigation under pressure, and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures”. It also highlights his role leading a group of volunteers in a successful mayday rescue.

Fiona Rist is a finalist for Communications and Incident Management Volunteer of the Year. She has been part of Coastguard Hibiscus for more than 10 years, working as a radio operator at the National Operations Centre. Her profile notes she is calm and professional, able to support crews through complex and high-pressure situations. Rist also manages skippers’ rosters, oversees training, and promotes a positive team culture.

Also nominated were Crew Chief Zane Bryhn for Outstanding Leadership, and secretary and dry crew member Nicole Highmore.

Bryhn has led the unit for four years, ensuring vessels are properly crewed and logging many hours on the water. He also established and maintains Seaflux, the unit’s vessel management system.

Hibiscus Coastguard president Rachel Hessey said they were incredibly proud to see four of their dedicated local volunteers nominated.

“Zane has led with commitment and skill as our crew chief for the past four years,” he says.

In this role, he ensures our vessels are appropriately crewed for the mission at hand – a responsibility he handles with great professionalism.

“Michael, our treasurer, not only ensures our financial sustainability but is also a highly active crew member, with countless hours spent on the water, including responding to some of our unit’s most challenging incidents. You’ll also find Michael at nearly every off-water fundraising event, and he plays a key role in community engagement when local groups visit our base in Stanmore Bay.

“Fiona brings outstanding value both on the water as part of our boat crew and behind the scenes with Coastguard Radio as one of the friendly, helpful voices boaters hear over the airwaves. She also actively supports the Manly Sailing Club, where her children are involved, further demonstrating her commitment to the local maritime community.

“Nicole, though new to the team, has already made a huge impact as dry crew, secretary, and in supporting crew welfare. It’s the small things she does that often make the biggest difference – birthday cards, meal deliveries during times of challenge, and just ensuring there’s always someone to talk to.

“Each of them embodies the spirit of volunteerism, and our unit is stronger because of their tireless contributions.”
