Exploring the Gulf by jetski

Red Beach resident Dr Jürgen Kolb  has found a unique way to combine his love of science, the sea and adventure: Guiding eco-tours of the Hauraki Gulf on jetskis.

After an early career in science, Kolb moved into the construction sector before deciding to turn his attention to tourism. “I wanted to do something that still drew on my science background and interest in the environment,” he says. “Jetski tours are a really fun activity. People want to switch off and experience something different, and that’s what we cater for.”

Kolb operates four jetskis, which can be booked for guided or self-guided trips. Tours leave from various locations along  Whangaparāoa Peninsula depending on the weather, and can take couples, families or small groups.

Because jetskis travel quickly, it’s possible to reach Kawau Island and back in half a day. Kolb also offers shorter  excursions, such as to Tiritiri Matangi Island, where riders can explore inlets, snorkel or simply drift quietly and listen to the birdsong. “I call it the soundscape tour,” he says. “You often see little blue penguins, with some luck dolphins and sometimes orca chasing food through the channel.”

Winter tours often focus on fishing, when the bigger fish return and marine mammals  hunt closer to shore, offering special encounters. Summer brings a mix of sightseeing and special trips, including an oyster-tasting tour up to Scotts Landing. “It’s such a beautiful spot,” Kolb says.

Safety is central to the business. Riders receive a full safety briefing and must sign a waiver acknowledging responsibility for their vessel. Each jetski is fitted with GPS tracking, and tours are postponed if conditions are doubtful.

Kolb says the Gulf is spectacular year-round. “We get some splendid days in winter when it’s dead calm and sunny. There’s always something to see.”
