Coastguard Hibiscus Coast will hold a charity golf tournament at Whangaparāoa Golf Club on Friday, November 21 to launch its fundraising campaign for a replacement rescue boat.
The Coastguard unit owns, maintains and operates two rescue vessels, which are crewed entirely by volunteers and provide 24/7 emergency assistance to boaties and the wider Hauraki Gulf community.
Hibiscus Rescue 1, a 9.5-metre Naiad based at Gulf Harbour Marina, is nearing the end of its service life. Coastguard Hibiscus Coast president Mark Wadman says the vessel will need to be replaced within five years, so the unit is starting to raise the $2 million required for a new boat.
“The organisation is volunteer-run, and while we receive some support from Coastguard New Zealand, most of the replacement cost will have to come through our own fundraising efforts,” Wadman says.
The club is seeking auction items and hole sponsors for the event. For more information or to donate, email secretary@coastguardhibiscus.org.nz
