The recently completed Point Wells cycling and walking trail will be officially opened this month with a community celebration at Matakana Country Park on Sunday, November 23 from 10.30am.
The Coastal Trail’s Grand Opening Celebration & Ride will include live music, food, coffee, face-painting, a sausage sizzle and spot prizes for the best-decorated (or dressed) bikes, helmets and riders.
There will be a blessing and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the $1.4 million, 1.8km-trail section, which runs along Omaha Flats Road from the country park to where the existing Omaha/Jones Road cycle track emerges onto Point Wells Road.
Official guests will include Rodney Councillor Greg Sayers, together with community leaders, volunteers and trail supporters who helped make the project possible.
“This is more than a trail opening – it’s a community celebration of this scenic new link,” a Coastal Trail spokesperson said.
“It represents local collaboration, generosity and a shared vision for connected, active communities, and everyone is welcome.
“We encourage everyone to dress up, and ride or walk to the event via the trail and take in the views along the way.”
The trust behind The Coastal Trail aims eventually to create a world-class walking and cycling trail network linking Puhoi to Mangawhai via the Matakana Coast. The next stage to be tackled will connect Matakana with Sharp Road (MM, Jul 21).
