Wood Street carnival celebration

The completion of a significant multi-year upgrade to the stormwater network and public spaces in Wood Street in Mangawhai was cause for celebration earlier this month.

Hundreds turned out for a street party, organised by Kaipara District Council in collaboration with Wood Street businesses, which featured twilight shopping and entertainment. Kapa haka by Mangawhai Beach School brought the closed off part of Wood Street to life.

Mayor Jonathan Larsen officially opened the event with a ribbon cutting, and praised the collaborative effort behind the transformation.

“Wood Street has long been a cornerstone of Mangawhai’s commercial and social life, and these much-needed upgrades have made it safer, more vibrant and more welcoming for locals and visitors alike,” Mayor Larsen says.

The Wood Street and surrounds revitalisation and stormwater project included upgrades to the old fire station site, the back carpark, and the relocated playground. Key features include permanent one-way road layout with 80 additional new off-street carparks, over 800 metres of upgraded stormwater network with rain gardens, and new public toilets near the playground, wrapped in a striking image by local photographer Andy Bruce.
