Vehicles on beaches

Whangarei District Council is asking residents how they feel about vehicles on beaches. The feedback will help in a review the Control of Vehicles on Beaches Bylaw 2009. The bylaw is designed to keep people safe, protect public health and reduce nuisance by managing how vehicles are used on beaches across the district. Currently, vehicles are banned at:

  • Ruakākā Beach, immediately north and south of the Ruakākā river mouth
  • the western side of Langs Beach
  • all dunes under Council’s control.

Some beaches are also regulated by Northland Regional Council. Legislation treats the beach as a road, which means that all road rules apply when driving on the beach including speed limits, dangerous driving, vehicle licencing and driving while intoxicated. Feedback closes on February 15 with a final decision expected later next year.
