Mangawhai fire contained

The cause of a grass fire on Roberts Street, near the Mangawhai Estuary, on Monday evening January 12, is still being investigated.

It took the Mangawhai Volunteer Fire Brigade, with support Waipu, Kaiwaka and Paparoa fire crews, about three hours to bring the blaze under control.

Around 20 people were involved in containing the blaze, as well as a second hotspot that had spread about 30 metres from the original fire. No buildings were threatened.

Chief Fire Officer Graham Kerrigan said the dry conditions likely contributed to the fire spreading quickly.

“When the fire started, it spread fast and reached the trees. The team knocked down the flanks, worked up to the base of the fire, and managed to contain it,” he said.
