Supportive parenting programme offered

Parents looking for better strategies to help them parent are invited to enrol in a free 14-week programme being introduced in Warkworth this year.

The Incredible Years Parent programme is designed for parents and caregivers of tamariki aged three to eight years.

It is a collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Hear Our Story facilitators Russell Su’a, Donna Southworth and Susie Talimalo-Ikihele.

Susie says they work as a team and tailor their approach to meet the needs of the parents enrolled.

For the last two years, the programme was offered in Wellsford. However, a need was identified in Warkworth so it was decided to shift the programme south.

“Anyone in the area is welcome, so we hope parents in Wellsford won’t be put off by the drive to Warkworth,” Susie says.

She says parents join the course for various reasons, but share a desire to add more tools to their parenting toolbox.

“Often we find parents already have all the skills they need to parent well, but just don’t realise it. The course is about unlocking that potential and helping them to get to know their children so they can understand the “why” that triggers certain behaviour.”

The goal is to help parents and children to have a positive relationship.

“If you’re feeling overwhelmed, isolated or unsure of what to do next, you’re not alone. Get in touch and, with guidance, we will help you feel more confident and supported.”

The course will be held at the Warkworth Town Hall and starts on Wednesday February 11, running weekly until May 27.
