A community food pantry at The Heads has officially been completed and is now clearly identifiable with newly-installed Lions Club signage.
The signage marks the final touch on a project built late last year near the Mangawhai Golf Club.
The pantry was constructed in December through a partnership between the Lions and the Mangawhai Shed, with Lions members Chris den Boestert and Eli Gilmore playing hands-on roles in its build.
Chris said the initiative was driven by a desire to support people in the community who might need food.
The pantry operates on a simple, open-access model, allowing anyone to take what they need or swap items as they are able.
The project cost around $1300 and was funded using proceeds from last year’s Mangawhai Food & Wine Festival.
Festival sponsor and New World Mangawhai owner Scott Henderson said supporting community projects was at the heart of the annual event.
“The purpose of the festival is to raise funds for initiatives like this,” he said. “It’s been really rewarding to see some of these projects come to life.”
Materials for the pantry were donated by Precision Construction.
