Bales of talent on show

The Silage Paint Competition is a small space of art amid tractors and lawn machines.

For the third year in a row, the Silage Paint Competition will be part of the Northland Field Days, featuring both individual and group categories, offering prizes from $100 to $500.

The idea first came about when the Northland Field Days committee president wanted to get the bales painted. The initiative received a great response, with many local artists volunteering to take part.

Just one year later, Jock Pickworth from the Dargaville Art Association, suggested turning it into a formal competition after seeing how successful and colourful the bales had become.

This year’s competition will officially be only the second formal competition and will be judged under two different criteria – People’s Choice and the Sponsors’ Trophy, awarded to the winner chosen by the sponsors, Fosters Home Décor and Kaipara Lifestyler.

Painting must be completed between February 9 to 23, and it is the artist’s responsibility to protect their work from the elements.

All materials – including paint, brushes, trays, water, and high-visibility clothing – will be provided and must be returned after the competition. However, artists are responsible for bringing any scaffolding or ladders needed for painting.
