Ōrewa College student Summer Torbet has powered her way to podium finishes at major regattas in both Australia and New Zealand.
Over the Christmas break, the Year 7 student travelled to Australia to compete at the Australian Open Skiff Nationals, held from December 26 until January 27. Racing against a strong international fleet, Summer sailed her way to claim First Female and Third Overall in the Under 13 division. She then stepped up to the Under 17 division and secured 5th Female and 11th Overall.
The regatta formed a key part of her preparation for the Skiff World Championships in Australia later this year, and she seized the opportunity to test herself against difficult international competition, she says.
After six intense days of racing, Summer returned to New Zealand, but she didn’t slow down, competing the next day, at the Auckland Anniversary Weekend Regatta. Once again, she rose to the challenge, capturing First Female and Second Overall in the Under 17 division.
Ōrewa College Principal Wiri Warriner says Summer’s continued demonstration of exceptional dedication, resilience, and skill and back-to-back performances across two demanding regattas highlight her commitment to the sport and bring immense pride to her school and the wider Hibiscus Coast community.
