Hakaru Hall celebrations begin

The venerable old Hakaru Hall will kick off its centenary celebrations this weekend by hosting artists involved in the Mangawhai Art Trail. Hall Committee chair Daryl Hepple says eight or nine artists, who can’t entertain trail visitors at their home studios, will set up in the hall. There will also be a photography exhibition by Mangawhai Snappers. “We’ve got a number of events planned over the year to celebrate the hall’s 100th birthday,” Hepple said. The 337sqm hall, which features an impressive matai floor and old-world charm, has been at the heart of Hakaru for generations, hosting everything from weddings and funerals to yoga and pilates classes. A new entrance was recently installed and some of the older amenities upgraded, thanks to a Lotto grant. The hall will be open on Saturday, from 10am to 4pm, and on Sunday, from 10am to 3pm.
