Applications for Northland’s sustainable kai initiative, the Kai Ora Fund, are now open.

With grants of up to $5000 available, Mahitahi Hauora’s Kai Ora Fund supports Northland-based, community-driven projects and initiatives that address food security and improve community resilience.

The purpose of the Kai Ora Fund is to enable Northlanders to access nutritious, sustainably sourced local food — something the organisation says is more important than ever.

“The Kai Ora Fund is about more than food. It’s about backing whānau to use their skills, knowledge, and innovation to provide for themselves, even in tough times. When whānau are supported to grow and gather their own kai, it strengthens resilience, mana, and wellbeing for generations to come,” Kai Ora Fund coordinator at Mahitahi Hauora, Erana Peita, says.

Since its establishment in 2015, the fund has supported more than 320 grassroots projects, distributing over $1 million in funding.

The Kai Ora Fund is a partnership between Mahitahi Hauora, Far North District Council, Te Puni Kōkiri, Northland Inc., Kaipara District Council, Northland District Health Board, and Whangarei District Council.

Community groups, whānau trusts, social enterprises, and small businesses are invited to apply for grants, with support available to help applicants through the process.

Applications close on May 17.
