The mystery of Ōrewa Beach’s stolen wheelchair has had a happy ending, with Denny Cavanaugh’s tri-ride wheelchair now returned safe and sound to the Red Beach resident.
Reported widely on social media two weeks ago, what began as a hunt for a thief took an unexpected turn, with Denny now believing it may have been mistaken for an inorganic curbside collection and taken to a temporary new home before being handed in to police after news of the search spread.
Although the tri-ride appears undamaged, it will be sent for servicing due to battery issues identified after its return.
Denny is thankful to have the wheelchair back safe and sound and is grateful for the community’s help.
“It was the support and help of the community that got it back to me. It was the fact that so many, many people spread the word, getting it into the news and raising awareness everywhere, that it was found. I’m very grateful for the outpouring of support,” she said.
