Aucklanders decide on maritime safety

Auckland Council is asking for public feedback on proposed changes to the marine rules, which would make lifejackets mandatory on recreational vessels six metres and under.

The Navigation Bylaw 2021 and its associated controls are designed to minimise incidents on Auckland’s harbours, rivers and coastal areas by setting rules around the use of life jackets and where certain vessels can go.

In addition to new rules regarding personal flotation devices, other key proposed updates to the bylaw include introducing safety, speed and access rules for newer types of vessels such as motorised hydrofoil boards and tow-foiling equipment.

Coastguard and other water safety organisations have been advocating for stricter rules for years, arguing that Auckland’s current legislation is out-of-step with both the evidence and regulations in other regions.

Public consultation is open until Sunday June 7.
