Butcher heads for national final

Mya Wilson-Hiraka said she was nervous at the regional competition but is already looking forward to the national final.

A New World Mangawhai apprentice butcher has earned her place in the national final of New Zealand’s premier butchery competition after winning the Upper North Island regional qualifiers.

Third-year apprentice Mya Wilson-Hiraka won the ANZCO Foods Butcher Apprentice of the Year category at the regional heat held in Auckland on June 20 and 21, securing her second trip to the national finals.

Competitors faced a demanding two-hour challenge that tested their technical skills, efficiency and creativity. Entrants were required to break down a beef rump, pork shoulder, lamb leg and two chickens before transforming them into a range of retail-ready products.

Wilson-Hiraka said she was both relieved and delighted with the result.

“I feel a bit overwhelmed but very happy with the result. I went into the day feeling pretty nervous, so I really had to focus on my breathing and staying centred,” she said.

“I think my structure and planning are what set me apart. My practice run was a bit rocky after hurting my finger and being off work for four weeks, but having faith in myself really paid off.”

Wilson-Hiraka said she was already looking ahead to the national final.

“My main focus will be refining my boning technique and working on the smaller detail pieces to elevate my display.”

The Upper North Island regional competition attracted 11 competitors. In the Pact Packaging Young Butcher category, the title was shared by Chloe Steel of De Bauchery in Whangārei and Matthew Hiroti of PAK’nSAVE Ormiston.

Head judge Peter Martin said the standard of competition had been exceptionally high.

“It’s been exciting to see the incredible talent on display. Combined with the skills we witnessed in the South Island regionals, it’s clear that the future of the trade is in strong hands nationwide,” he said.

Wilson-Hiraka received a $150 cash prize and trophy and will represent the Upper North Island region at the National Butchery Awards grand final at Eventfinda Stadium in Auckland on August 13.
