Transform old clothing into something new

An upcycled tote bag is just one of the items people can create.

Sustainable Kaipara is hosting a low-waste sewing workshop for people looking to reduce, reuse and recycle old clothes and unused fabric. The hands-on event will focus on teaching simple sewing skills, reducing waste and giving old materials a new lease on life. People are invited to bring an item of clothing in need of a simple repair, such as reattaching a button or a small fix. There will also be opportunities to get creative by learning how to transform old t-shirts into dog toys or reusable bags, making small tote bags from upcycled materials, creating reusable net bags to hold fruit and vegetables and exploring other upcycling ideas. No sewing experience is necessary, and all skill levels are welcome.

The event is a drop-in session from 10 am to 12 pm on Monday, July 13. To register, visit facebook.com/sustainablekaipara.
