New speed limits introduced

Schools across Kaipara have new variable speed zones in place during drop-off and pick-up times designed to make roads safer for children and their families.

The newly installed limits are 30km/h for schools in urban or rural areas, where children are more likely to walk or cycle to school, and 60km/h for schools directly on state highways or on higher-speed roads.

The limits apply for up to 45 minutes before school starts and finishes. For 30km/h zones, the speed changes cover 150 metres on either side of the school gates, or 300 metres where the speed limit is 60km/h.

Mangawhai Beach School deputy principal Emma Grieve is hopeful that the new speed limits will help the community be more mindful around the school.

“We are anticipating that the new speed limit of 30km/h at Mangawhai Beach School will encourage the local community and visitors to be more vigilant around our school, especially during drop-off and pick-up times,” she says.

The changes follow the Government’s introduction of the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024 and are enforceable during school zone times. Outside those times, usual permanent speed limits still apply.
